Building emissions policy open house #2

The City of Boston is developing a new policy to cut carbon pollution from large buildings.

September 28, 2020
2020-09-28T18:00:00 - 2020-09-28T19:30:00

This meeting is the second of three open houses. During this meeting, we’re going to answer some of the questions asked by attendees during the first open house in July. The second open house will include updates from the Technical and Resident Advisory Groups, and breakout discussions on specific areas of interest identified that were, including:

  1. Financing retrofits
  2. Designing for equity
  3. How to decarbonize a building

Large buildings in Boston are the biggest emitters of carbon pollution and they also represent the buildings that have the largest opportunity to cut their carbon emissions. This pollution comes from the oil and gas we burn to heat and power our homes and offices.

We're developing this policy as part of the implementation of Strategy #5 in the 2019 Climate Action Plan Update: Develop a carbon emissions performance standard to decarbonize existing large buildings. During the first meeting, we introduced the building performance standard, and the process to develop it and help inform the City’s process moving forward. You can view the meeting recording, slides, and breakout discussion notes on our project page.

The Zoom link for the meeting will be emailed to all attendees ahead of the meeting. Please let us know if you have any requests for accommodation when you register at the link below.

Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub launch

Join the virtual launch event for a Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub, a partnership with the Environment Department and Eversource Eversource Energy.

September 9, 2020
2020-09-09T12:00:00 - 2020-09-09T13:00:00

The City of Boston and Eversource are partnering to launch a Building Energy Retrofit Resource Hub. This resource will make it easier for large building owners, operators, tenants, and stakeholders to reduce their energy use and carbon emissions and save money.  It will help you find the best solutions for your building by helping you understand, access, and implement Eversource’s expertise, energy efficiency services and incentives.

Large buildings account for nearly 70% of carbon emissions in Boston. As we strive towards carbon neutrality by 2050, the Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO) and the Resource Hub will continue to work with residents to become more aware of their emissions and responsible for their reductions.

The virtual launch event will include short presentations from:

  • Carl Spector, Commissioner of the Environment Department
  • Benjamin Silverman, Climate and Buildings Program Manager
  • Steven Miller, Eversource Energy Efficiency Consultant
